Staff Selection Commision

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is an organization under Government of India to recruit staff for various posts in the various Ministries and Departments of the Government of India and in Subordinate Offices.

This commission is an attached office of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) which consists of Chairman, two Members and a Secretary-cum-Controller of Examinations. His post is equivalent to the level of Additional Secretary to the Government of India.

The Staff Selection Commission has its headquarters in New Delhi. At present, there are seven Regional Offices at Allahabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Chennai, Bangalore and two Sub-Regional Offices at Raipur and Chandigarh. Each Regional Office is headed by a Regional Director and each Sub-Regional office is headed by a Deputy-Director.

The main responsibility of the Staff Selection Commission is to make recruitment to Group C (non-technical) & Group B (non-gazetted- both technical & non-technical) posts in departments of Government of India, its attached & subordinate offices except those for which recruitment is made by the Railway Recruitment Boards & Industrial Establishments.

The Staff Selection Commission is also assigned the task of conducting Departmental Examinations for

  • Promotion from Group D to LDC Grade,
  • Promotion from LDC to UDC Grade and
  • Promotion from Stenographers Grade D to Stenographers Grade C besides holding Periodical Typewriting Tests in English & Hindi.

The Staff Selection Commission has a nationwide network of 9 Regional/Sub-regional Offices located at Allahabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Guwahati, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi & Sub-regional offices located at Chandigarh & Raipur.

Main responsibilities of Staff Selection Commission’s Regional/Sub-regional Offices include, inter alia, implementing the policies & programmes of the Commission, supervising & overseeing its field operations, liaisoning & establishing rapport with State Governments & their Departments, making arrangements for impartial & smooth conduct of examinations, assisting Interview Boards & servicing the Examination Centres within their area of jurisdiction.

Regional Network

The SSC has nine Regional/Sub-Regional Offices in different parts of the country. These Regional/Sub- Regional Offices are responsible for receipt & processing of applications for various examinations, issue of admit cards to the candidates, conducting the Interviews/PETs (wherever required) either at the Regional Headquarters or other major cities within the regions.

List of Exams conducted by Staff Selection Commission:

Staff Selection Commission conducts the following competitive examinations every year.

1) Combined Metric Level Examination: Candidates having Matriculation qualification are eligible to apply for this Exam. In the same examination, those who are having Stenography speed of 80 WPM can apply for Stenographer also.

Combined Metric Level Examination for posts of LDC’s and Stenographers is conducted in 3 stages. The preliminary examination is of objective type is conducted to shortlist candidates for next examination i.e. Main Examination and the candidates who qualify in the main examination are to appear in a typewriting test/stenographer test for final selection.

There are various examinations for graduates such as Tax Assistant, Combined Graduate Level, Sub-Inspectors in CPO’s, Section Officer (Audit). However, the graduates in Commerce, in addition to the above, can also apply for Section Officer (Commercial) examination. The graduates in Economics/Statistics/ Maths. Can apply for Statistical Investigator also in addition to all the above examination except Section Officer (Commercial).

The Engineering graduates are in addition to above, are eligible to appear the Junior Engineer exam. Conducted by the Commission. For the candidates having a degree in Hindi, are eligible apply for Junior Hindi Translators also.

2) Combined Graduate Examination: Combined Graduate Exams for the posts of Inspector in Income Tax/Central Excise/Department of Post, Sub-Inspector in CBI, Assistant, Divisional Accountant, Auditor, Junior Accountant, UDC etc. This examination is also conducted in 3 stages i.e. preliminary, Main and Interview for mostly group B non-gazetted posts. However, for posts of Auditors, UDC, Jr. Accountants, no interview is conducted and candidates are selected on the basis of their performance in the main examination.

3) Sub-Inspector in CPO (BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, and SSB) Examination: Only one written examination is conducted for this examination, followed by a physical, medical test and interview. There is some relaxation in height for the candidates belonging to North-Eastern Region.

4) Section Officer (Audit) & Section Officer (Commercial) Examination: These examinations also consist of only one written examination followed by an interview. The posts of Section Officers mainly exist in Accountant General Offices located all over the country.

5) Junior Engineers Examination: It consists of only one written examination followed by an interview for posts of Junior Engineers in CPWD.

6) Tax Assistant Examination: This examination is conducted for selection of candidates for posts of Tax Assistant in Central Excise/Income Tax department. It consists of a written paper followed by a skill test in computer typing.

7) Junior Hindi Translator Examination: One written test followed by an interview is the selection criteria for this post.

8) Various Posts: In addition to the above, some specialized posts like Chemist, Computer typist, Research Assistant, Hindi Translator etc. in central government offices located in northeastern region are conducted by SSC (NER), Guwahati. For those posts, generally, no written test is conducted. The short-listed candidates are selected on the basis of an interview only. To get shortlisted for any selection post, the candidate should enclose all experience certificates/extracurricular certificates though the same is not asked for.
